# XP and Renown

## XP

XP is earned through **beats**, which are awarded automatically by the `!sleep` command. Every 2 beats converts to 1 XP.

Each sleep awards **1 beat**. On the **7th sleep** of the weekly cycle, **2 beats** are awarded instead, for a total of 8 beats (4 XP) per full cycle. See [Rest & Recovery](rest) for full details on the sleep system.

**Event and combat XP** is awarded separately by staff: 1–2 XP per event or combat depending on risk, for all characters that participate.

### Bounce-back/ New sheet XP
We understand that sometimes characters that have been around a long time, with rank and a lot of XP, do fall in battle: It's the nature of the game. However, we don't want playing to be Sisyphean as a result.

When a character dies in game, 80% of that previously killed character's *earned* XP can be directly transferred to the player's next new character. Any previously held cookies banked by the player can be used 1:1 to bring the new character in at a previously attained higher rank. (ie. If the character died having previously attained Adren, the player could choose to use 1 cookie to come back Fostern or 2 to have the new character come in as Adren again.)

'Retiring' an established character for a new concept does not give the same bonus for XP, but banked cookies can still be used for rank and loosened restrictions.

## Renown

Renown will be tabulated and awarded monthly, as if assessed at monthly moot, regardless of if the staff actually fully runs one in that month or not.
Players can expect up to 5 temp renown to be awarded to each Garou character. The Temp Renown can be distributed at the players digression, however the final distribution will need to be justified to and cleared by staff. Scandals' and punishments both can and will affect the amount of Temp renown awarded to each character every month, or might have the STs limit distribution into specific categories of Honor, Wisdom, and Glory.

Once a character has gained 10 points of temporary Renown in a particular category the character can add a point of permanent Renown in that category.
