Story Brainstorm — Mine Arc
IRC Log
10:44 dorje like, really, wtf is the story? what are they all coming into right now?
10:45 shatteredrose Id like to know that too
10:46 shatteredrose so I like the idea of exploring how we are living in a world where we dont have much choice but doing a balancing act between the weaver and the wyld
10:47 shatteredrose how we keep ourselves relevant in the modern era without becoming complete fossils
10:47 shatteredrose ((kinda like most of the players here lol))
10:47 dorje I think it's a clear theme
10:48 dorje Maybe another way to put it, what happened before the players got here?
10:49 shatteredrose struggling to keep out the ever expanding world from creeping into the caern
10:49 shatteredrose like we are having trouble with people moving ever so closer
10:50 shatteredrose maybe someone is trying to buy / reopen the mines
10:50 shatteredrose maybe not necessarily to mine
10:50 shatteredrose but as an attraction of sorts
10:50 shatteredrose which leads to more people about but also the possibility of the wyrm leaking out
10:51 dorje yeah, but werewolves kill things. what are a bunch of higher level npcs doing here at this sept? how did they get to this level? are they new here, because if not, they had to kill a lot of shit to get where they are
10:51 dorje Remember that the premise is that the red star is on the rise and the world is troubled. It isn't a time for peace
10:52 dorje The whole setting in the books is that these are turbulent times
10:53 shatteredrose I mean I can easily say the strider followed owl and hold on someone is knocking at my door
10:57 shatteredrose so you know the beta is playing around with enbued plants so she could be here because this has the best soil for it, and its in an effort to give the best advantage to the warriors. She is a teacher first after all, if shes high ranking
10:58 shatteredrose you know though
10:58 shatteredrose I just had a thought
10:58 dorje I feel like we're having a disconnect
10:58 shatteredrose the wyrm in the silver mine
10:58 dorje Garou are violent
10:58 shatteredrose yes let me get back to your question
10:58 shatteredrose uktena often trap rather than kill
10:59 shatteredrose which means someone has to watch over it, this one happens to be powerful, which is why the caern here was formed
10:59 shatteredrose but because its powerful it attracts other such baddies
10:59 shatteredrose in a never ending circle of violence and maintenance
11:00 shatteredrose and this is me brainstorming ideas until something works :P
11:00 dorje Yes, that is how caerns go
11:00 dorje they're all like that
11:00 shatteredrose well what is YOUR idea
11:00 shatteredrose i didnt pick this setting lol
11:02 dorje All nodes are contested. Every supernatural splat needs nodes. Every pack wants to control a node. BSD wants to control nodes. They're magnets for trouble and thus for stories
11:03 dorje I'm trying to ask what was the last act of violence in defense of the sept. Was it isolated, the start of something new, the end of some other cycle? If it's isolated or new, what was the thing before it
11:03 shatteredrose Oh okay
11:03 shatteredrose Hmm
11:03 dorje Everyone is low level, so it makes sense to me that we start off with more simple stuff, banes of the corrupted local wildlife. That's an easy one
11:04 dorje I think we should have the npcs talking about the things that happened before or still cleaning up things
11:04 shatteredrose but that can go back to what I was saying about the mines being bought to be 'opened' and that kind of stirred up the wyrm which starts the infections
11:05 dorje I'd suggest that there was some sort of loss or drama in the relatively near past to have a mystery to uncover. Those here now won't tell the full story, why, I don't know
11:05 shatteredrose 'they went in to inspect the mines a few weeks back, ever since then we have had an uptick in twisted spirits'
11:05 shatteredrose Oo
11:05 shatteredrose I like that too
11:05 shatteredrose 4 went in for the inspection only 3 came back out?
11:05 shatteredrose they were townies
11:06 shatteredrose or people were out hiking and they came back with these crazy stories but one didnt come back and now their friends are under suspicion of foul play
11:07 dorje I'm trying to avoid a start for these players where everything was peaceful and now it isn't. That's not how I interpret the werewolf setting at all and I think it lends itself to furries
11:08 dorje Those are good too, but I was specifically talking about garou. Like maybe there's a reason there are vacant positions. Maybe there was a leadership misstep. Maybe the mistress of rites is the new beta
11:08 shatteredrose Inola could be reading the story on her tablet
11:08 shatteredrose Hmm, like they tried to go into the mines before the humans got there but things went bad
11:10 shatteredrose the ritual was 'successful' in keeping the big bad locked away for now but the cost was her getting caught in the trap as well
11:11 dorje haha, you're such a mary sue ;)
11:12 shatteredrose ugh its what MoR do, RITES
11:12 shatteredrose ass
11:12 shatteredrose whatever :P
11:12 dorje lol
11:12 dorje Not the rites
11:13 dorje give me a sec to respin the same idea
11:14 dorje did we change the alpha from a wendigo to a uktena?
11:15 shatteredrose hes always been a uktena
11:15 dorje ok
11:17 dorje The mines were built on land that was sacred to X natives, not like a burial ground, but one of their story anchors. Despite being closed, the land wasn't returned and it remained private property. The local X tribe has unsuccessfully tried to sue for egress rights, since getting the land back just isn't happening, but the old corporate owners refuse due to creating complications with selling
11:18 dorje So when the new company bought and started inspecting the mines, the alpha wanted to wait and see what comes of it. Whatever wyrm-thing inside, he was confident the sept could deal with it. If lots of people had to die, specifically the mine operators, that's sort of a bonus
11:20 dorje The old beta, maybe a coggie if the angle is less death, or a gof that was eager for a fight, disobeyed and brought a group into the mine. They fought and grievously wounded whatever was inside, which allowed a rite to be performed to seal things off... for now
11:21 dorje The fight was costly without the power of the alpha and full sept. The beta fell, along with several other higher ranking sept members. The rites mistress, who is now beta, performed the rite which was actually the right call
11:21 dorje That has tension between the alpha and the beta. The disobedience is tolerated because it was right in the end. The uktena recognizes this, but it's a thing
11:23 dorje The mining company, during inspections and trying to reopen, have experienced a series of mishaps that have led to several deaths and regulatory oversight. That's delayed things significantly, so the mines aren't active, but can be "soon"
11:25 shatteredrose so the caern is doing its best to keep the mines from reopening at all, now? which is the beginning story?
11:28 dorje It could be, but I'd suggest it as a larger arc altogether
11:28 shatteredrose thats what I meant. Chapter 1 story
11:29 dorje I mean, that can be a constant thing across multiple chapters. The price of metals is only going up and mining is more profitable
11:30 dorje I don't think they're going to quit
11:30 shatteredrose thats fair
11:30 dorje Chapter 1 story can be about the local corrupted wildlife and maybe a particular official or something
11:31 dorje maybe a mine inspector or manager or something became corrupted by a bigger bane and is worthy of the first chapter BBEG
11:33 shatteredrose keeping them from polluting the spring water nearby that feeds our caern heart tree, perhaps
11:33 shatteredrose should we present this in staff?
11:38 dorje no
11:38 shatteredrose we need to wait to see whats going on with tanith and atta?
11:38 dorje we don't know, rn, if our staff channel has two players in it
